When I went to Singapore earlier this year, I told myself not to go anywhere near the big shopping mall areas. No to Takashimaya. No to Suntec. No to Funan, Vivo City, and the list goes on. I wanted to see the other places in the country. I know, I have been there countless times. But, I am convinced that even if you make me stay there for years, there would always be something new to discover.
Halfway through my 5-day trip, I wasn’t able to resist it; I ended up going to Bugis Junction because I was in the area anyway. While going around the mall, I happened to pass by a store of Kiehl’s. If you have never heard of it, it’s practically an “entry-level” luxury skincare brand. I consider it as such because while it’s more expensive than the typical products you might be using as a child or as a teenager (unless, you’ve been exposed to it early on), it’s not too costly compared to the likes of La Mer, and Perricone MD, among others.
I love the brand! I first encountered it when a friend of mine who was then taking an internship at L’Oréal showed me a Facebook contest of the brand, which I joined (Read: I Love Paper!) Yikes! The way I wrote that entry was so sad. Ha ha! I ended up getting a Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser which I have loved ever since. Anyway, I digress.
When I passed by the Kiehl’s store, what drew me in was when I saw two products I have never heard of. Mind you, I’m aware that some products in other countries are not available here, but those products, I have never seen ever. I asked about it from the pleasant lady wearing the trademark lab coat, and she mentioned that those were the Kiehl’s Tumeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque and Cilantro & Orange Extract Pollutant Defending Masque. Interesting!
She talked me through both, and mentioned the benefits of both. Essentially, the Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque is meant to restore one’s fatigued skin, making it brighter and give your face a “youthful glow”. The other one, the Kiehl’s Cilantro & Orange Extract Pollutant Defending Masque, is supposed to defend skin from the damaging effects of pollution. Much needed if one is residing in Metro Manila!!
I was sold! I was ready to purchase even without trying the products, but unfortunately, they didn’t have stock of both. You see, it was only launched in Singapore very recently and not all stores carried it as of January. The lady gave me samples though! I was giddy. I looked like a happy kid who was getting free candy.
The nice lady reminded me that I should try before I buy, because I might end up being too excited but end up just feeling disappointed. Or something, I honestly wasn’t listening, I was just searching where the other Kiehl’s stores were so I could buy a tub of both already. I ended the trip not being able to purchase either because it was too taxing to search for shops, and the Kiehl’s store in Changi didn’t carry it. Sad!!
I tried the samples when I arrived back in Manila, and I was honestly skeptic, specially the Cilantro & Orange Extract Pollutant Defending Masque one. In my head, I was like “Really? ‘pollutant defending’? I highly doubt that.” I was so wrong. The Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque, over time, did give me that promised rosy appearance. I mean, I do have rosy cheeks by default, but the product made me “glow”. Not to mention, the product felt nice on the skin. It was just a bit taxing to rinse off because it just kept feeling…sticky. But the Cranberry seeds though felt nice.
Back to the Cilantro & Orange Extract Pollutant Defending Masque. It worked. At least, I think it did. I used it for a week and my skin felt safe, and it looked visibly better. How? Despite being exposed to the same damaging elements–smoke, Metro Manila pollution, too much sun–my skin looked better. I personally don’t like the way it feels on my face because it made my skin feel sticky, and gooey, but it does the job well. And, for me, that’s the most important part of it.
Suffice to say, both work well. When my samples ran out (the nice lady gave me 3 of each, God bless her), I got depressed because I didn’t know when the Philippines will be getting these masques (while at the same time asking myself when will our country ever have nice stuff like a MUJI Café, a really good crêpe place such as Crêperie Sainte-Anne [which, until now, I still tell my friends they should go to if ever they find themselves in Rennes, France], and a government not filled with corrupt leaders, among others).
The other day, I chanced upon the Kiehl’s Store in the East Wing of Shangri-la Mall, and found out that both will be arriving this May! I was happy again! I left my contact details, and I will definitely head over to purchase one masque in particular. Which one?
Definitely the Cilantro & Orange Extract Pollutant Defending Masque just because I feel like my face needs it more. I just need to protect my face from all the dirt and craziness of Manila. Fingers crossed there won’t be any delays!
